Mr. Gay Griffith
Biography
Mr. Gay Griffith is a highly respected insurance professional whose career spans more than four decades of excellence, leadership and service to the industry. He began his journey in 1982 with the Barbados Mutual Life Assurance Society (now Sagicor Life Inc.) and quickly found his true calling in insurance sales, where he would go on to build an exceptional and enduring career.
In 1998, Gay entered management as a Unit Manager and steadily advanced through the ranks to Agency Manager, Branch Manager, Assistant Vice President of Sales, and ultimately Vice President of Sales in 2015. In this role, he leads the entire Barbados Sales Team, overseeing Branch Managers, Agency Managers, Unit Managers, Advisors and the Sales Support Team. A prolific producer and trusted advisor, Gay has earned all of Sagicor’s top individual sales awards and consistently qualified for industry conventions throughout his career. From 1986 until his promotion to Vice President, he qualified for every Mutual/Sagicor convention and was also invited to speak at several of these events. He has further shared his expertise as a presenter at numerous CARAIFA Congresses, contributing meaningfully to regional industry development.
Deeply committed to professional growth and education, Gay earned his Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation in 1989, completed the AMTC programme in 2000 and achieved the Chartered Financial Consultant (CHFC) designation in 2002. He is a member of Advocis and a 16-year Life and Qualifying Member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), advising countless individuals and families on all types of insurance and personal financial planning solutions.
His leadership impact extends well beyond production. Gay has been an active member of the Association for over 40 years and a strong supporter of the BARAIFA and CARAIFA educational programmes. His service includes roles on the BARAIFA Board as 1st Vice President, President, and Past President, as well as moderating the LUATC Year 1 and Year 2 courses.
His career stands as a testament to decades of dedication, excellence and impact within the industry. Gay has also earned numerous BARAIFA Awards, including Life Underwriter of the Year and the Antoinette Thompson Achievement Award. Regionally, he has received CARAIFA’s Caribbean President Award, Caribbean Sales Achievement Award, Caribbean Quality Award and in 2026 he received the prestigious award as he was inducted into the CARAIFA Hall of Fame.
Beyond the insurance industry, Gay has remained deeply committed to service and community development. He represented Barbados as a sprinter at the CARIFTA Games in 1982, winning a bronze medal, and later devoted decades to basketball as President of the Barbados Amateur Basketball Association and as a long-standing player, coach, and manager with the Mayhill Club. He is also the Managing Director of Pharmaceuticals Plus Inc., a company in operation for over 27 years, through which he provides meaningful support to individuals in need within the St. Peter community.
Gay is heavily involved in the Church and is a member of the St. Peter’s Parish Church Family, where he serves in many capacities including Church Warden, Lay Minister, Chief Server and Bass soloist. His Music Career started at the Combermere School where he not only studied the rudiments, but he went on to be a cadet where he rose to the rank on Cadet Under Officer. He was a renowned Trombone player and at times conducted the Combermere School Cadet Band.
A devoted family man, Gay has been married to his wife Joan for 26 years and is the proud father of two daughters, Gaybriella and Giselle. Gaybriella joined the Industry just over 2 years ago and has been doing exceptionally well so far.
Today, as Vice President of Sales, Gay Griffith’s legacy is defined not only by his personal achievements, but by the people he has developed and mentored, the industry he continues to strengthen and the communities he serves.
